Supervision

I usually supervise topics in the following domains (but not limited to):

  • Digital (vehicle) forensics
  • Embedded forensics and security
  • Security analytics

Open topics

Topic Description Type
CySec lab setup Create a cyber-security lab infrastructure for research and teaching tasks BA
Security of Apple CarPlay Structured security analysis of the Apple CarPlay software stack. The thesis looks in the Apple CarPlay software stack. Depending on the type, certain parts of the stack are viewed. The student should be familiar with the fundamentals in cybersecurity and reverse engineering. BA/MA
Forensic analysis of in-vehicle infotainment systems Performing a digital vehicle forensic investigation (hardware-based) on a used in-vehicle infotainment system. The student is expected to perform a structured investigation using non-invasive up to invasive techniques to acquire and analyse data from the hardware components. MA
Proofing security properties of embedded security protocols This thesis investigates symbolic verification (proving) and falsification (attack finding) for embedded security protocols. The used prover is the Tamarin Prover. The student can select the embedded security protocol MA
Digital forensics of AI-generated IT systems Investigate what forensic capabilities are automatically provided by fully vibe-coded applications BA/MA

Writing a thesis with me

  • Send me an e-mail with a topic you are interested in (you can also choose a custom topic)
  • Write an abstract of what the thesis is about (“Expose”) → LateX template can be found here
  • Get an OK for the expose from me
  • Register the thesis and start work
  • At halftime you are expected to give an intermediate presentation
  • After submission, you will have the final presentation in which you defend the thesis

Funding options

I encourage and support students in bachelor or master thesis scholarships. Below I list some options I have experience with. They are in no particular oder:

  • Chaotischer Catalysator Stipendium (master thesis) (link) that funds with €1,500 per thesis
